Mosdos Kechnia

Legacy

The Kechnia-Nadvorna dynasty
and its continuation in Jerusalem

Mosdos Kechnia carries forward a tradition that stretches back through generations of Chassidic leadership, Torah scholarship, and genuine devotion to every Jew who walked through the door.

The name Kechnia (‏קעכניא) refers to a town in the Carpathian region of Romania — known today as Bogdan Vodă — where Rebbe Pinchos of Kechnia established a court rooted in the traditions of the Nadvorna dynasty. It was known not for grandeur but for warmth, for accessibility, and for the deep conviction that Torah must meet a person where they stand.

That conviction has not changed.

The Dynasty

The Maharsham of Brezhan

Rav Shalom Mordechai HaKohen Schwadron · 1835–1911

One of the greatest poskim of the modern era. His teshuvos shaped practical halachah across the Jewish world. The Maharsham is a direct ancestor of the Kechnia line: Rebbe Pinchos of Kechnia was a grandson of the Maharsham.

Rebbe Mordechai of Nadvorna

‏זצ״ל

The founder of the Nadvorna Chassidic dynasty. From his court emerged multiple branches across the Carpathian region, each carrying forward a tradition of accessible leadership, deep tefillah, and care for every Jew. The Kechnia branch descends from this lineage and follows Nadvorna minhagim and traditions to this day.

Rebbe Pinchos of Kechnia

‏זצ״ל

A grandson of the Maharsham and heir to the Nadvorna tradition, Rebbe Pinchos established the court of Kechnia. His approach blended deep learning with genuine warmth — an open door for every Jew regardless of background. He built not a grand court but a home, and that distinction defined everything that followed. Rebbe Pinchos authored the sefer Tzafnas Pane’ach, a work of Torah scholarship that reflects the depth and breadth of his learning.

The Kaliver Rebbe

Son-in-law of Rebbe Pinchos of Kechnia · ‏זצ״ל

A close member of the family and a towering figure in his own right. As son-in-law of Rebbe Pinchos, the Kaliver maintained deep ties with the Kechnia court. His presence in the family was a source of guidance and connection across generations.

Rebbe Yissachar Ber of Kechnia

Rebbe Yissachar Ber Shapiro · ‏זצ״ל

Rebbe Yissachar Ber continued the Kechnia court, maintaining its character through the upheavals of the twentieth century. During the dark years of the Holocaust, he was instrumental in saving Jewish lives — an act of mesiras nefesh that embodied the deepest values of the dynasty. He married Rebbetzin Rechel (1901–2007), who lived to nearly 106 years of age. Her life spanned the entirety of modern Jewish history — from the Carpathian shtetl to Jerusalem — and she became a living bridge between the pre-war Chassidic world and its continuation, carrying the spirit of Kechnia into a new era.

Today: Rabbi Issamar Ginzberg

Rav of Kehillas Shaarei Tefillah · Jerusalem

Before her passing, the Rebbetzin expressed her wish that her grandson Rabbi Issamar Ginzberg carry forward the Kechnia legacy. A graduate of the Or LaGolah Rabbinic Training Program and holder of hachtara letters continuing the Kechnia-Nadvorna Chassidic dynasty, he honors that trust through Kehillas Shaarei Tefillah in Jerusalem — maintaining the founding mission of Torah, tefillah, and a place where every Jew can feel at home. The kehillah follows the minhagim and traditions of Nadvorna as passed down through the Kechnia line. He reprinted the sefer Tzafnas Pane’ach of Rebbe Pinchos, ensuring that his great-great-grandfather’s Torah continues to be studied and available. He is also a prolific author, Torah educator, and business consultant who has been featured in hundreds of publications worldwide.

The Connection

Through the maternal line — Rubin to Rebbe Pinchos of Kechnia to the Maharsham — and through the Nadvorna Chassidic tradition passed down from Rebbe Mordechai of Nadvorna, the leadership of Mosdos Kechnia maintains both a direct family connection to one of the most consequential halachic authorities of the past two centuries and a living link to a Chassidic heritage built on warmth, tefillah, and love of every Jew. This is not merely historical. It is a living responsibility.

Continuing the Mission

Mosdos Kechnia today operates as a registered non-profit (Amutah) in Israel. Our work includes maintaining a kehillah in Jerusalem, producing weekly Torah content, publishing the teshuvos of the Maharsham in English through The Maharsham Project, and preserving the legacy of the dynasty for future generations.

We are actively engaged in several legacy projects: the reprinting and dissemination of Tzafnas Pane’ach, research and writing on the history of the Kechnia-Nadvorna dynasty, and the preservation of oral histories, photographs, and documents from the family’s past. These efforts ensure that what was built over generations is not lost but transmitted — faithfully and accessibly — to those who come after.

Daily Daf Yomi shiurim and other Torah content are available on TorahAnytime.
